About Overflow Wildlife Management Area

Overflow Wildlife Management Area

Overflow Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in northeastern Louisiana and spans across Madison and East Carroll parishes, encompassing extensive seasonally flooded hardwood forests and bottomland wetlands along the Mississippi River Valley. This area provides crucial habitat for a wide variety of wildlife species, including waterfowl, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous species of fish, amphibians, and reptiles. The wetlands here are part of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, a vital ecological region that supports migratory birds and resident native species alike. Established to conserve wetlands and provide wildlife habitat, Overflow WMA plays an important role in local flood control and water quality improvement by filtering sediments and pollutants. Outdoor enthusiasts visit Overflow WMA primarily for hunting, especially waterfowl and deer, as well as for fishing in the bayous, creeks, and flooded forests. Birdwatchers come to observe populations of ducks, herons, egrets, and other swamp birds. The WMA’s terrain consists of swamp hardwoods, cypress-tupelo wetlands, and open water areas. Access is mostly by boat or via designated hunting roads and boat ramps. Due to its wetland nature, much of the area is accessible only seasonally or by watercraft, making it a unique destination for those seeking solitude and wildlife-rich environments. The WMA does not offer developed hiking trails or campgrounds, but its wilderness character appeals to hunters and anglers looking for robust outdoor experiences linked to Louisiana's rich river valley ecosystems.
